All of the members of KCL Laws’ US Practice were born and educated in America before moving to Australia. They are experts navigating the often-subtle differences in the Australian and American culture and legal system, which can create traps for the unwary and greatly affect transactions and international commercial disputes.
Increasingly, companies, entrepreneurs and business executives doing business across the Pacific seek out the commercial, litigation, estate planning, immigration and intellectual property expertise of our US Practice.
Equally, clients possibly used to global legal suppliers are surprised at how easy and cost effective it is to do business with us, with no loss of quality or anything being ‘lost in translation‘.
Litigation, immigration and estate planning
Clients can have confidence in a team that has represented the US Department of Justice for many years, and successfully acted for the US Government in a case that went to the High Court of Australia in a landmark decision about sovereign immunity. Principal lawyer David Weinberger, is a New Yorker who began his career in a boutique insurance law firm in New York City before moving to Melbourne in 2002. He is a graduate of Emory Law School where he studied international law, and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from George Washington University. He was admitted to practice law in Georgia in 1995 and in New York in 1996. He was admitted to practice in the State of Victoria in 2003.
David is also Head of the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice and he maintains strong ties to America through personal connections and by serving on the Board of Governors for the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia.
Commercial and intellectual property
Special Counsel Roger Rothfield grew up in Philadelphia and then studied at Duke University in North Carolina. With more than 30 years’ experience acting for and against US companies, Roger has worked on mergers and acquisitions, and has extensive experience in the specialised entertainment field serving well-known celebrities in this area.
Roger also has an extensive network of professional contacts throughout America. As such, he often acts as a bridge between Australian clients and their US lawyers or advisers.
In addition, the firm’s intellectual property team has a strong network of trade mark and intellectual property lawyers in the US.
