Our profile

KCL Law is a medium-size, Melbourne law firm led by a diverse and progressive group of expert lawyers. We provide quality advice and deliver highly strategic outcomes to our clients — achieved by a balance of expert legal acumen, creative thinking and informed commercial insight — in a concise and accessible manner.

Since our establishment in 1981, the firm has grown considerably as we have welcomed new clients and developed highly specialised legal proficiency. Today, KCL Law has 13 Principal Lawyers and over 80 employees. Our service offerings have grown substantially, as we continue to partner with clients in a range of sectors providing legal and commercial advice across nine key practice areas.

History

In December 1981, Geoff Kliger and Roger Rothfield merged firms with Joseph Katz and Aitan Schmideg to establish Kliger Katz Schmideg & Rothfield. Located at 390 Lonsdale Street, the firm provided legal advice in relation to property and general commercial transactions, and commercial litigation.

In the mid-1980s, the firm became known as Kliger Katz and relocated to 377 Lonsdale Street, and subsequently changed its name to Kliger Partners in 1992. It was at this time that the firm began to expand its service offerings to include intellectual property, information technology and employment law, and the current generation of Principal Lawyers, such as David Brown and Sam Frey, began to join the firm. In 1999, Kliger Partners relocated to 280 Queen Street.

In March 2017, in addition to relocating its offices to 555 Lonsdale Street, the firm underwent a major rebrand. Proud of its heritage and looking to the future, a new name was adopted that respected the founding partners, and reflected the evolution of the firm as a contemporary and innovative commercial practice, led by a progressive group of expert lawyers. So, why KCL Law? ‘KCL’ is an abbreviation for ‘Kliger Commercial Lawyers’, and ‘Law’ is at the core of everything we do.

Founding partners Geoff Kliger and Roger Rothfield continue to practise in the firm.
