A key member of the firm’s Property practice, Darren focuses entirely on lease and tenancy-related transactions advice, and dispute resolution in relation to lease-related matters.
Darren has extensive experience and depth of knowledge in all areas of lease transactions, including Agreements for Lease, Leases, Subleases, Incentive Deeds, Variations, Renewals, Assignments and Surrenders, Deeds of Agreement and related agreements (ranging from storage, signage, short-term occupancy, car park, common area and other forms of licences or contractual agreements) and disputes across all Australian jurisdictions (and in New Zealand).
With over 12 years’ experience in all areas of commercial, retail and industrial leasing, Darren has advised a variety
of clients (both landlord and tenant) on a broad range of issues, including lease incentives, make-good obligations, limitation of liability, and transfers and development-related issues.
Darren’s approach to his practice is simple — he invests heavily in building a detailed knowledge of his clients’ practical, commercial and legal needs — and then focuses his negotiation services on those issues most important
to each particular client, avoiding unnecessary time or costs spent on issues of less significance (or negating amendments which will not deliver tangible benefits to a particular client in any given transaction. This approach ensures best outcomes for clients, and has contributed heavily to Darren’s strong client retention rates and ever-increasing referral list.
Prior to joining KCL Law, Darren worked for a number of national law firms, where he acted for a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from private land-owners and self-managed super funds through to corporate and major institutional landlords, while also extensively acting for both private and corporate commercial tenants; major national and multi-national retail brands and industrial tenants.
Darren has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from The University of Tasmania. He joined the KCL Law as a Special Counsel in January 2018.
